When the Capitol Theater in Yonge and Castlefield first opened in 1918, pig-hat-wearing visitors and dating filled the place to watch Mary Pickford movies and vaudeville acts. “It’s a spectacular building,” says Josh Zagdanski, Madison Group vice president of skyscrapers.

In collaboration with Westdale Properties, the developer stages the monument’s next act, its transformation into The Capitol Residences.

Spacious private terraces and oversized balconies, meanwhile, offer city views, Zagdanski explains.

The stepped levels on the east side of the building will allow residents to elevate the landscape to several stories, onto their large terraces, while those living on the west side of the property will enjoy the new 3,700 square meter parking lot turned into a park, says Zagdanaski.

“It’s not ordinary; it’s the antithesis of a traditional downtown Toronto project, ”he says.

The lobby is designed by Alessandro Munge of Studio Munge, bringing drama to the building’s public and private spaces: the fun custom lightings, lavish furnishings, and arched doors in the lobby; the moody speakeasy-inspired golf simulator and social club with mile-long drapes and jade hues, and even an imaginative play area for the kids.

As for the suites themselves, “what makes them special is that they’re bigger – they’re designed to live,” Zagdanski explains. “These are all 10 foot ceilings, which is unique to any condo project.
