This Milwaukee senior center had a former life as a dormitory for frontline healthcare workers
This week on Urban Spelunking, we’re heading to the South Side of Milwaukee to visit an active center for the elderly, with an interesting history as the South View Hospital Nursing Home.
“The OASIS Senior Center – OASIS is the acronym for Organization for Active Seniors in Society – is the current iteration of a seniors program that dates back to the late 1940s and has had its current home at 2414 W. Mitchell St. since the early 1960s,” writes Bobby Tanzilo of OnMilwaukee in the this week’s article.
OASIS offers a range of programs for seniors, including arts and crafts, exercise and wellness programs, access to technology through its computer lab, health screenings and counseling services. meal. Milwaukee Recreation, a division of MPS, operates the programming and center, as well as other senior and community centers around Milwaukee.
But before its most recent chapter as OASIS, the center was used as a dormitory-style housing unit for nurses working at South View Hospital. The “Isolation Hospital” treated patients with highly contagious diseases as early as the 1920s, while the attending nurses lived in the adjacent building.
Listen to this week’s podcast to learn more about these early frontline healthcare workers, and visit OnMilwaukee for more photos and history.
