This wooden bicycle may have a minimalist design, but it is not a simple two-wheeler, but a manifesto on sustainable urbanism. It’s actually a reminder that we must all do our part to improve the environment and help heal our planet. Then meet OpenBike, an open-source design bike that lets you build and assemble it yourself, at an affordable price.

But why would you want a wooden bicycle first? Well, according to Arquimaña, the architecture studio behind the project, it’s not about you, but the eco-conscious citizen in you, who has the chance to bring something positive to your city. .

It takes a lot of polluting energy to make and repair cars and even conventional bicycles. This is why the founders of Arquimaña, Iñaki Albistur and Raquel Ares, found a solution to avoid the transport of materials and all the expenses related to the purchase of a bicycle in store, offering the world a more sustainable alternative. . They provide users with all the information, files and instructions needed to make their own wooden bicycle.

Everything can be downloaded for free and you can customize the bike to meet your specific needs and preferences. There are four models to choose from: Rev1, Rev2, Rev3 and Rev4. The first is the first OpenBike model released by the studio in 2015. The second is the last model and it was released in 2019. All bike models require more or less the same materials: 21 mm (0.8 in) plywood of birch, a 5 mm (0.1 in) aluminum plate, TPU filament, carbon fiber PLA filament (for 3D printer) and Carpenter’s white glue.

Once you To download your digital files, you need to go to a local manufacturer with a CNC milling machine and 3D printer, to make the necessary parts for the bike. The last step is to follow the instructions provided and assemble your wheeler.
